sustainability

In today’s society we live in a throw away world where little care for nature and natural movements have now been replaced by the fast life, we all indulge in. Sustainability and reducing chemicals where possible are our way of life at Balancing Heart Vineyard, returning to traditional practices. In the vineyard we only use organic fertilizers, no insecticides and we are now utilizing biological fungi where we spray the vines with a product called Botector, an organic spray where the fungus sprayed on blocks the Botrytis Cinera (Mould) from growing on the grapes.

We are now releasing Cryptolaemus, an Australian native Lady Beetle that attacks and destroys Mealy Bugs (A pest that lays their eggs in the middle of the bunch of grapes and begins feeding on the sugars), Brown and Green Lace Wings, these are released to assist in control of scale in grapevines, and finally Trichogrammatid wasps are, these minute insects that parasitize other insects’ eggs. These wasps are as small as 0.5 – 1 mm long and are wonderful natural predators in vineyards.

In the winery we utilise Autochthonous (Indigenous naturally occurring) yeast from the vineyard, this combined with little use of chemicals and the decision to not add acid delivers a wine with natural poise and delicacy, a product of the combination of the 2 greatest winemakers ever, Mother Earth and Mother Nature. Fermentation aids are organic, and all wines are Vegan (The non-use of egg whites, Isinglass, milk, or blood additives have been in the forefront of our winemaking style for many years now).

Our wines are a product of maximum viticulture, where we have adopted traditional pruning and canopy management practices combined with researching the appropriate variety to move forward with the increasing lament of Climate Change. Soft, personable and now unoaked wines are being born with minimal intervention in winemaking. The non-use of oak is the latest decision from the Balancing Heart winemaking crew as oak can live to be 150 + years old, we simply chop the tree down make a few barrels out of the tree, use the barrels for a few years and the barrel becomes a garden ornament and the white ants devour it, very unsustainable.
